About the Position

As JW House enters a new phase of exciting growth as a nonprofit organization, the Executive Director (ED) will provide leadership and direction to scale impact. The ideal candidate will have a deep belief and understanding in the power that caring for the caregiver has in helping patients heal. This individual will work closely with the JW House Board of Directors (Board) to build and execute its strategic vision.

The ED is responsible for the overall functioning of the organization and for ensuring that the organization’s strategic and financial goals are met. The ED will build collaborative relationships, both internally and externally, and provide leadership in developing program, organizational, and financial plans. This full-time, exempt position reports to the Board and is reviewed annually by the Board.

Responsibilities

General

  • Provide leadership to the Board, staff, volunteers, and other stakeholders in implementing the vision, mission and goals of the organization.
  • Ensure that the strategic plans, structures, systems, staffing, and day-to-day operations of JW House are executed for maximum effectiveness and impact and that client services are held to the highest standard.

Strategy and Planning

  • In conjunction with the Board, provide the vision and strategies for the continued long-term success of JW House.
  • Continue organizational momentum for facility expansion by successfully executing on capital campaign, working in tandem with the hired capital campaign consultant to further implement joint plans and partnering closely with new stakeholders.

Board of Directors

  • Establish a strong working partnership with the Board and act as a thought partner with the Board President.
  • Actively engage in Board recruitment to add depth, diversity and capabilities to fulfill the JW House mission and support the Board in Board development and fundraising.
  • Keep the Board informed about key developments in the field, as well as major organizational accomplishments and changes; prepare and present an annual report; and provide regular reports to the Board regarding objectives, finances, staffing, volunteers and other relevant issues.

Staff and Volunteer Management

  • Provide leadership, recruitment, oversight, evaluation and retention of staff and volunteers.
  • Maintain a positive working environment that motivates and encourages staff to participate fully in the mission of the organization and provide opportunities for staff growth and career enhancement.
  • Develop human resources and compensation strategies that encourage recruitment and retention of high-performing employees.

Financial Management

  • Work with the Board in preparing an annual budget; ensure all fiscal and grantee reporting is complete and timely; promote and adhere to sound fiscal management practices, evaluated through periodic and annual internal reviews and audits; and maintain official records and documents.
  • Ensure that the organization remains in compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations, including relevant legal and fiscal practices of a non-profit corporation.
  • Monitor spending to ensure the organization operates according to approved financial budgets.
  • Analyze financial information and trends, and provide recommendations for changes, as necessary and appropriate.
  • Explore opportunities for mission-based earned income strategies to continue to diversify and strengthen the funding base.
  • Regularly assess and refine the organization’s structure and staffing to ensure maximum effectiveness, the highest quality of services, and appropriate operational capacity.
  • Ensure that programs, operations, and professional image are supported by sufficient technological systems and business infrastructure.

Fund Development

  • Working with the Board, develop reliable sources of income that will sustain the organization through the realization of its long-term mission and vision.
  • With the Development Director, define and execute fundraising goals and strategies including individual, major, and corporate gifts, planned giving, special events and gift follow-up processes.
  • Work closely with Development Director and other stakeholders to leverage connections, maximize fund development, and diversify funding sources to meet both annual revenue requirements to fund operations and annual reserve growth target.
  • Strengthen fundraising strategies and objectives; monitor achievements and revise plans when financially expedient; monitor all aspects of JW House’s fundraising to ensure accountability; identify, cultivate, and solicit diverse fundraising prospects; and personally cultivate and solicit donors, as appropriate.

Community Relations

  • Act as JW House’s spokesperson, ambassador and advocate, actively promoting the organization and its value in the community.
  • Participate in community-based efforts to further the organizational mission. The ED must be fully engaged with the local community, inspiring clients, their family members, staff and Board participation.
  • Develop effective relationship and communications strategies with clients, families, donors, peer agencies, hospitals, and other stakeholders.
  • Foster inter-agency and external community relationships; show leadership and integrity promulgating JW House as a “model” agency for hospitality houses.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Highly skilled in relationship building, with a proven track record of long term strategic relationships.
  • Experience as an Executive Director or senior staff in a large organization. Capable of both management delegation and hands on contribution within a small team.
  • Nonprofit financial acumen, including business development, financial controls, organizational skills and management.
  • Understanding of the dynamics and ability to work respectfully with families facing medical crises.
  • Demonstrated fund development experience including measureable fundraising success with major donors and special events. Capital campaign experience preferred.
  • Experience collaborating successfully with a Board of Directors.
  • Minimum of 10 years of management experience in human services.
  • Undergraduate degree required, Master’s degree preferred (public administration, organizational management, business administration or equivalent).
