The Lourenco Family: A Home Close to the NICU
The Lourenco family’s journey into parenthood didn’t begin at home, it began in the NICU. When Kayla and Miguel’s twin boys, Mack and Colt, arrived more than two months early, their first weeks were filled with uncertainty, long days at the hospital, and the overwhelming need to stay close.
Introduced to JW House by a NICU social worker, the Lourencos found a place where they could stay close during this critical time. Instead of long commutes from Moss Beach or distant hotel stays, they had access to warm meals, a safe place to rest, and simple but essential comforts: A Day-Use room, a fridge for breast milk, and a supportive environment that allowed them to focus entirely on their sons. “Everything was helpful,” Kayla shared. “We didn’t have to worry about anything except being there for our boys.”
Miguel balanced long days that started at 5 a.m. with work and school before returning to the hospital each night, while Kayla remained by the twins’ side. During an especially overwhelming stretch, arriving at JW House brought a much-needed sense of relief. Kayla recalls a welcoming staff, hot shower, and finally having a quiet moment with a cup of coffee—small amenities that made a big difference and helped them feel like they could get through it.
After five weeks in the NICU, Mack and Colt were strong enough to go home. Today, just over a year later, they are thriving—surpassing milestones and growing into healthy, energetic boys. Reflecting on their journey, Kayla shared how much their perspective has changed, with a deeper appreciation for each moment and how far their family has come.
Looking back, JW House was more than a place to stay—it was a source of stability, comfort, and care during an incredibly fragile time. “It felt like family,” Kayla said. “We felt safe, supported, and truly cared for.” For the Lourenco family, that support made all the difference in allowing them to be present when their boys needed them most.
